Autoimmune Diseases are an immune response caused by systemic inflammation that leads your body to attack itself. Your immune system has a very sophisticated system for keeping you safe that leads it to identify all of the foreign substances that enter your body or that you come into contact with. If your immune system deems anything dangerous, it will produce antibodies to ward off the harmful intruders.
Much of what we are taking in and putting on our bodies we have never seen before from a genetic sense. So the immune system is constantly trying to figure out, is it friend? Or foe?
Autoimmune diseases, when taken all together, become a HUGE health burden. Among these are rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, Celiac disease, and thyroid disease. In fact, over 80 diseases have been classified as autoimmune and the list is growing.
Autoimmune disease now affects over 24 million Americans and five percent of the population in Western countries. They often include weird, hard-to-classify syndromes like inflammation, pain, swelling, and general misery.

Why the numbers are increasing is still unknown, but there are many theories. However, the variables in our environment are ever increasing. Much of what we take in and put on our bodies we have never seen before from a genetic sense. So the immune system is constantly trying to figure out is it friend or foe? Sometimes it gets it wrong and sets off an incredible overreaction that is like a runaway train. In order to stop the train, you have to figure out the trigger and the culprit, and remove them or at least calm them down to relieve the inflammatory response and misery.
Many of the newer Biologic drugs that work on suppressing the immune response are life improving and important to have in the tool kit while looking for the cause. However, they don’t treat the cause, therefore do not relieve the problem and can actually cause further problems down the road. Hopefully, they will only be needed for a short time until the answer is found, and the train can be stopped or at leased slowed way down. Autoimmune conditions are usually quite complicated and may involve a stress or emotional component.
